REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGIST

Dr. Awoniyi Awonuga, the Medical Director of Michigan Fertility Services, is a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) specialist. He is an international figure in REI, beginning practice over 30 years ago in the United Kingdom. He moved to the United States in 2000 and completed another residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Fellowship in REI to enable him to be licensed to practice in the United States. Dr. Awonuga holds the Kamran S. Moghissi, MD Endowed Chair in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne State University. He also served as the Division head of REI from 2017 to 2021. In clinical IVF, Dr. Awonuga has performed over 5,000 IVF egg collections, with at least two-thirds resulting in embryo transfers. Dr. Awonuga has been married for over forty years to his lovely wife, a Neonatologist at Michigan State University/Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. They have two adorable children, one of whom is a vascular surgeon.

PUBLICATIONS

As a testament to his experience, expertise, and scholarly activities, he rose to become a professor of REI six years after graduating from fellowship at Wayne State University. He has 133 original publications and 109 abstracts, posters, and podium presentations at local and international scientific meetings in REI, maternal-fetal medicine, and general obstetrics and gynecology.

EDUCATION:

Dr. Awonuga received his medical degree from the University of Ibadan Medical School in Nigeria in 1979. He later completed residency in Ob/Gyn at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria and a residency (Ob/Gyn) and fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) in the United Kingdom. To enable practice in the United States, Dr. Awonuga completed a third residency in Ob/Gyn at Maimonides Medical Center in New York (2000-2003) and Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Wayne State University (2007-2010). Following his REI fellowship, Dr. Awonuga completed scholarly training in the Women’s Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) Career Development Program of NIH/NICHD.

AWARDS

Professor Awonuga has received the American Society of Reproductive Medicine Star (ASRM) award every year since 2017, which recognizes members of the society who have presented during at least nine of the past ASRM Annual Meetings 2012-2024. He has also received the OBGYN Residents’ Research Award several times since coming to Wayne State University.
